Machine Readable Passport
 

The Government of Pakistan has introduced Machine Readable Passports (MRP) incorporating special security features designed to check human trafficking and forgery. Pakistan is one of 80 countries in the world to have moved towards machine-readable traveling documents and first in the South Asia.

This Machine Readable Passport was presented at the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) conference in Montreal, Canada where it was declared as a leader in implementing ICAO's vision of a smart passport, integrating RFID, facial recognition and fingerprint technologies. It also contains digitally printed personal data with a photograph in the bar code. Pakistan has earned soft image with the introduction of MRP which is the authentic travel document.

The process flow adopted for the new MRP/MRV system is most suitable for a country like Pakistan where registration of all genuine citizens is considered most vital because of its geopolitical circumstances. The Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC) or Computerized Registration Certificated (CRC) or the National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistani(NICOP) being made as mandatory for issuance of the Machine Readable Passport (MRP). The issuance of passports is directly complementing the government's efforts to increase the number of people in its citizen database and in improvement of the overall governance of the country.

To enhance the capacity of the border control authorities through use of an interface with the MRP/MRV database and assist in the prevention of transnational crimes.

MRP has benefited both people and country. First; The authorities can check the flourishing menace of human smuggling once the automatic border control is integrated with the Machine Readable Passport.


Second; the database of passport seekers is being maintained at the secure place which can be utilized for verification purpose and Third; it helps the people to seek their passports from designated passport offices without any hassle.

The procedure of getting MRP is very simple; no application form and photos are required any more. The applicants have to only bring their Computerized National Identity Cards (CNIC/NICOP) along with existing passport and all the data will be entered into the system online and the digital photograph and finger prints are captured. The process flow adopted under this system has made it mandatory for all applicants to be registered as pakistani citizens requiring everyone to be a holder of either of the registration documents i-e CNIC or CRC or NICOP. The Immigration Officer conducts a brief interview to check the applicant's credentials.

Step 1: Deposit fee at counter.
Step 2: Present fee receipt and Identity Documents for issuance of token.
Step 3: Digital fingerprint capture.
Step 4: Digital photo capture (contact lenses and glasses to be avoided).
Step 5: Data Entry according to record.
Step 6: One to One interview by MRP Officer.

Q.1 Is endorsement in MRP for children valid or not?
Ans. No, every individual gets separate passport.

Q.2 Should either parent be present for the processing of their child's passport?
Ans. Yes

Q.3 Is mother's and father's ID card required in case of children's passport?
Ans. Yes

Q.4 Is it possible to process MRP without computerized Child Registration Certificate (CRC/Form B) or NICOP ?

Q.5 Is old ID card (Manual) valid for making the MRP?

Q.6 Is CNIC (without picture) valid document for making the passport?
Ans. No

Q.7 Is it mandatory to declare dual Nationality?
Ans. Yes

Q.8 Does a child applicant who carries NICOP require CRC (Form-B) for processing MRP?
Ans. No

Q.9 If the applicant wants to change his/her Name, Date of Birth, Father's Name etc, what will be the procedure?
Ans. He/she has to apply for the fresh passport after updating the CNIC/NICOP.
